The Sound You Avoid
A short “sit with this” for people who stay busy so they don’t have to hear the quiet — and what the quiet might be trying to say.
Goes with the story The Sound of the Ball.

Before you start
Kieran stayed late at the shop most nights because going home meant sitting in the quiet. This exercise is ten minutes of that quiet, on purpose, with a little structure so it doesn’t swallow you.
Steps
- Switch off the telly, the music, the podcast. Put your phone face-down.
- Set a timer for five minutes. Sit.
- When a worry gets loud — and one probably will — don’t argue with it. Just name it silently: money, work, family, that thing I said. Then let your attention come back to the room.
- Count how many times you named something. There’s no right number.
- When the timer goes, write down the one worry that came back most often.
Write
Where do I stay busy so I don’t have to hear the quiet?
What worry kept coming back when I sat still?
Who is one person I could tell about it, the way Kieran told Samuel?
Sit with this
Samuel asked Kieran: “What do you think happens if you keep going exactly like this?” Then: “And if you don’t?” Kieran’s second answer was “I don’t know.” Samuel said that was a better answer than the first. Sit with your own version of both questions.
The Ripple
Tell one person the worry you wrote down. If it’s about money, look up free, independent advice, such as Citizens Advice. Then do one thing you used to love, even for ten minutes.
